Background and Mission Plan

Here's a brief description of where ARInternet came from, and where we hope to go:

ARInternet is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Applied Research Corporation (ARC). Founded in 1979, ARC is a high-technology company specializing in research and development, technical support services, instrument design and fabrication, and software development and distribution. ARC is composed of three wholly owned subsidiaries --- Applied Research of Maryland, Inc. (ARM), ARSoftware Corporation, and its newest venture, ARInternet Corporation.

ARM operates predominantly in the government contract arena. It is divided into two divisions: the Technical Services Division (scientific software design and development, mathematical analysis, laboratory experiment design and implementation, and scientific data analysis in support of research programs in the Earth and space sciences, optics, electronics, and chemistry), and the Instruments Division, (design and fabrication of specialized hardware for use in spaceborne scientific observation).

ARSoftware, formed in April 1992, diversifies ARC's business base by developing markets in the scientific and technical computer software industries. ARSoftware currently publishes, distributes and resells products under licensing arrangements with universities, industry, and government agencies. Among the ARSoftware family of products are programs for planning and analyzing space systems, spacecraft orbits and operations, for calculating the optical properties of materials, for calculating chemical reaction rates and for representing crystalline structures.

In late 1993, as a direct result of ARC's belief in the growth potential of the Internet and its increasing usefulness in many of the scientific disciplines, the Company decided to offer a new Internet service. Specifically tailored to scientists, engineers, doctors, teachers and students in the various fields of science and technology, the new company was able to draw upon the considerable talents and expertise of ARC personnel (half of the staff of 150 or so employees are Ph.D. scientists) to help chart its course.

Thus, from its inception, ARInternet was designed to be more than just another provider of Internet services. Instead, ARInternet has positioned itself to become the place to go on the Internet for information useful to those in search of scientific knowledge. It will accomplish this goal by first providing a reliable, high-speed, full-service link to the Internet, utilizing state-of-the-art networking hardware and software with built-in capacity for expansion and improvement.

ARInternet hosts, maintains, and provides gateways to numerous free and commercial scientific databases, refers subscribers to online research and document delivery services, and offers WWW, ftp, and gopher server capability to facilitate information exchange. The company plans to become a leader in electronic publishing and conferencing, and is actively pursuing new and powerful technologies whereby knowledge may be extracted easily and efficiently from the overwhelming avalanche of information all around us. ARInternet offers basic and advanced training in the use of Internet tools to local area companies and sponsors and promotes educational and public service initiatives to ensure that everyone who desires to may participate in the coming information revolution.
